1 The Life
Brain Kay talked to Dame Janet Baker about her remarkable career, from first successes in Yorkshire to the responsibilities of becoming an international star.

With contributions from Martin Isepp, John McCarthy, Sir Charles Mackerras and Rodney Milnes, and music from Dame Janet’s vast recorded output, including songs by Vaughan Williams, Schubert and Elgar, arias by Bach, Gluck and Handel, Schumann’s `Frauenliebe und leben’, Donizetti’s `Maria Stuarda’ and Britten’s `Phaedra’.

2 The Concert Hall
In the second programme, Dame J4anet talked to Brian Kay about her experiences on the concert platform, from the intimacy of lute songs to working with conductors such as Klemperer, Boult, Bernstein and Barbirolli. With music by Mendelssohn, Handel, Campion, Bach, Martini, Gounod, Brahms, Mahler and Elgar.

3 The Recital Room and Recording Studio
Dame Janet Baker talked to Brian Kay about the delights and pressures involved in pleasing audiences worldwide as well as the invisible listeners behind the microphone, and reflected on the crucial relationships between pianist and singer, and words and music. Withcontributions from Martin Isepp, Sir Neville Marriner and Leo Black, and music by Stanford, Warlock, Handel, Chausson, Bach, Strauss, Schoenberg, Ravel and Schubert.

4 The Opera House
In the last programme in the series, Dame Janet talked to Brian Kay about her work on the opera stage and the roles that particularly inspired her 0 from handel’s Julius Caesar and Kate in Britten’s `Owen Wingrave’ With contributions from Sir Charles Mackerras, Raymond Leppard, John Copley, Ian Partridge, Rodney Milnes and Della Jones, and music from operas by Handel, Gluck, Berlioz, Purcell, Mozart and Britten.
